Rather than a painted likeness, this print reproduces a sculpted bust of Washington by Giuseppe Ceracchi, an Italian sculptor who worked in the United States in the early 1790s and modeled several portraits of national leaders. H.B. Hall, a New York engraver who made many portrait plates in the 19th century, translated the three-dimensional head into a line engraving, so the image shows a sculptor's view of Washington filtered through a printmaker's hand. Engravings like this carried the likeness of the first president into homes, schools and public buildings, when photographs did not yet exist.
