Washington Circle, at the junction of Pennsylvania Avenue and New Hampshire Avenue, held one of the capital's most prominent early monuments: an equestrian bronze of George Washington by the sculptor Clark Mills, dedicated on Washington's birthday in 1860. The rearing horse and the figure's raised hat drew attention from the start, and the statue was among the first large equestrian bronzes made in the United States. Photographs from around 1860 were still a fairly new medium, so this print captures a monument and its setting at a moment when Washington was becoming a central symbol of national unity on the eve of the Civil War.
