Few pictures on this board capture a dedication quite like this one, a wood engraving of the unveiling of Clark Mills' equestrian statue of George Washington in Lafayette Square, across from the White House. The ceremony took place on Washington's birthday in 1860, and the *New York Illustrated News* gave it a two-page spread on pages 248 and 249. Mills, a Charleston-born sculptor, had worked on the commission for years, and his bronze rider on a rearing horse was one of the earliest equestrian statues cast in the United States.
