Washington appears here under the epithet that followed him through the nineteenth century, "the father of his country," and the gallery files the sheet among its Revolutionary War battle pictures. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued it, produced inexpensive hand-colored lithographs like this one in large numbers for middle-class parlors and schoolrooms that wanted patriotic heroes on the wall. The record dates the print only to a span, between 1856 and 1907, which covers much of the firm's long publishing run.
