Horatio Greenough's seated marble Washington, shown here, stood on the east grounds of the Capitol in the 1860s, and Congress had commissioned it decades earlier. Greenough carved the figure in Italy and based its enthroned pose on ancient images of Zeus, a classical choice that many Americans found strange for a national hero. This plate was published in Morrison's Stranger's Guide, a handbook for visitors that helped travelers in Washington seek out the city's monuments and public buildings. Its appearance in such a guide shows how central the statue had become to the capital's sights.
