What sets this view apart is the statue itself: Horatio Greenough's seated marble figure of George Washington, which stands on the east grounds of the Capitol. Greenough carved it in Italy in the early 1840s, and he modeled Washington as a enthroned, half-draped figure in the manner of ancient Greek images of Zeus. Many Washingtonians found the pose and partial nudity startling, and the statue was often mocked. By the time this photograph was made, around 1866, the marble had been exposed to the weather for years, which makes the print a useful record of how the monument looked in the decade after the Civil War.
