Cut by the engraver Pierson, this wood engraving appeared in volume 6 of *Gleason's Pictorial* in 1854, on page 113, as an illustration for Washington's Birthday. In the 1850s, the anniversary was marked with speeches, parades, and printed tributes, and the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association, founded in 1853, had begun working to preserve George Washington's estate. Illustrated weeklies like *Gleason's* helped shape how Americans pictured the first president, so the print is worth viewing both as a portrait and as a piece of popular publishing.
