Unlike the other Washington pictures on this board, this poster is an announcement rather than a portrait or scene: it tells the public that February 22 is a legal holiday and that no business will be transacted. Its wording points to a time when banks, offices, and government bodies closed for the day, and the notice gives a sense of how the holiday was observed in the 1890s. The poster was made by Edward Penfield, a New York designer who was one of the leading figures of the American poster boom of that decade. He was known for bold flat areas of color and simple, direct lettering, which made his posters readable from a distance on busy streets.
