Few portraits of Washington show him so plainly in fraternal dress, here as a Master Mason. He was initiated into the fraternity in Fredericksburg, Virginia, in the early 1750s, later presided over the Alexandria lodge, and took part in the Masonic ceremony laying the U.S. Capitol's cornerstone in 1793. Prints like this one circulated widely in the decades after the Civil War, when lodges and patriotic groups were eager to claim the first president as their own. The record credits the publisher as Duval, Son & Co., but that attribution and the c1870 date are unverified.
