George Washington appears here in the regalia of a Freemason, a subject that set this print apart from the many standard portraits of him that circulated in the nineteenth century. The color lithograph was produced around 1866 by Strobridge & Gerlach, a firm based in Cincinnati, Ohio, which was a major center of commercial printmaking at the time. Its imprint names Pike's Opera House, a well-known Cincinnati venue, suggesting the piece was tied to local theatrical or public entertainment. Prints like this drew on Washington's reputed membership in the fraternity, which Americans of the postwar era often invoked as a sign of civic virtue and patriotic brotherhood.
