Looking across the Potomac from the hilltop at Arlington House, this view takes in the young federal capital before its streets and monuments were fully built. Arlington House, the Greek Revival mansion built by George Washington Parke Custis, grandson of Martha Washington, sat on the Virginia side of the river and commanded one of the broadest prospects of the city. Views like this one were popular in the nineteenth century, when the District of Columbia was still sparsely settled and its government buildings stood out against open fields and scattered houses. The vantage makes clear how far the planned city was from its grand design at the time.
