The statue at Washington Circle is an equestrian bronze of George Washington, set at the junction of Pennsylvania and New Hampshire avenues, so it stands out from the many other Washington monuments on this board. Sculptor Clark Mills, who also made the Andrew Jackson statue in Lafayette Square, designed it, and it was placed in the early 1860s, when the capital was still a young and only partly built city. The photograph shows the bronze rider and horse rising from the open ground of the circle, with few buildings around it. That sparse setting helps show how the city's ceremonial avenues were still taking shape.
