Credited to Wittemann Bros. and dated to about 1876, this single print shows George Washington in the centennial year of the Declaration of Independence, when Americans marked a century of nationhood with parades, exhibitions, and printed portraits of the nation's founders. Washington's likeness was reproduced constantly at the time, and it was often used to present him as a model of civic virtue. Prints like this one were sold widely to homes, schools, and patriotic societies, so they show how the first president's image was shaped for ordinary Americans a century after the Revolution.
