Few portraits of George Washington carry a French lineage as direct as this one, which calls him the "généralissime" of the Americans and the liberator of the United States. Bonnieu drew the design from a painting supplied by the Marquis de Lafayette, the young French nobleman who served under Washington during the Revolutionary War, and Chevillet engraved it. The record dates the print to the late 1770s or 1780s, a period when French enthusiasm for the American cause was high and Washington's image was circulating widely in France. The print presents him as a military commander first, a figure of public heroism rather than a private individual.
