Reinier Vinkeles's etching presents Washington under the Dutch caption "generaal der Noord-Americaanen," or general of the North Americans, a label that reflects how Europeans first encountered the American commander. Vinkeles, a Dutch engraver, worked from an original painting owned by a private collector, P. van Winter, so the print was likely made for Dutch viewers who followed the war. The bracketed date of 178- places it in the 1780s, when the Dutch Republic was weighing its support for the American cause and Washington's leadership of the Continental Army was closely watched in Europe.
