Here Washington sits on horseback in the open ground between the two opposing lines at Princeton, the moment the title describes. The fighting took place on January 3, 1777, when his army turned back British troops a week after the victory at Trenton, and the scene reflects the popular image of him steadying men under fire. The hand coloring, added to the black-and-white plate, was a common finish on 19th-century prints made for family parlors and schoolrooms. The title credits Van Ingen, and the picture shows how later generations preferred to remember the battle.
