Washington is the focus of this print, shown at Princeton on January 3, 1777, as he rode forward into the fighting to steady Continental lines that were giving way. The battle was fought outside the college town only a week after the American victory at Trenton, and it ended with the British pulling back toward New Brunswick. Many later pictures of the engagement presented the commander as a calm figure above the smoke and chaos, an image that shaped how Americans remembered the winter campaign.
