Washington appears on horseback amid smoke and musket fire in this scene from the Battle of the Monongahela in July 1755. He was then a young officer serving as aide to General Edward Braddock, and the ambush by French and Native forces went badly for the British column. Painter Junius Brutus Stearns made the original composition, which was turned into this color lithograph by Régnier and printed by Lemercier in Paris, a firm known for fine color printing. The series title, *The Soldier*, presents Washington's early military service as a model of courage under fire.
