Junius Brutus Stearns painted the original canvas that this color lithograph reproduces, and the scene shows George Washington in his role as a Virginia planter rather than as a soldier or statesman. Stearns was an American painter known for historical and patriotic subjects, and the image belongs to a mid-nineteenth-century wave of pictures that presented Washington as a plain, hardworking gentleman of the land. The lithograph was prepared by Régnier and printed in Paris by Lemercier, a firm known for high-quality color printing. Its circulation in France reflects how widely American Revolutionary-era imagery was admired abroad in that period.
