This print shows the last hours of George Washington at Mount Vernon in December 1799, after a brief illness, rather than his public career. It is a color lithograph after a painting by the American artist Junius Brutus Stearns, with the stone work by Régnier and printing by Lemercier in Paris. Its date, around 1853, falls in the same years the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association was formed to save the estate, when Washington had become a national symbol. The staged, hushed gathering around the bed shows how Americans of that period wanted to remember his death.
