In this lithograph, the setting is Washington's bedchamber at Mount Vernon in December 1799, where he died after a short illness that followed a long ride in cold, wet weather. Junius Brutus Stearns, an American painter, created the original composition, and the color print was made by the lithographer Régnier and printed by Lemercier in Paris. Its appearance in France reflects the broad European and American interest in Washington as a national hero, long after his death. The scene shows the family and attendants gathered around the bed, a theme that appealed to nineteenth-century audiences drawn to images of a patriot's final moments.
