Here Washington stands alone rather than in the middle of a particular engagement, presenting him as the commander who held the Continental Army together through the long war with Britain. The engraving was made by H. Wright Smith after a painting by Thomas Hicks, a Pennsylvania artist known for his portraits. Prints like this circulated widely in the 1850s, a decade of strong public interest in Washington, when fundraising for the Washington Monument in the capital was also under way. Its place among battle scenes on the board reflects how Americans of the period tended to see Washington as inseparable from the Revolution itself.
