Washington appears here on the field at Trenton, receiving a salute after the fighting of December 26, 1776. That battle followed his crossing of the icy Delaware on Christmas night and gave the Continental cause a much-needed win after a run of defeats. The scene comes from a painting by the Scottish artist John Faed, translated into an engraving by William Holl, a London-trained engraver known for his portraits. The print dates to about 1860 and was produced by the Kendall Bank Note Company of New York, showing how Revolutionary War imagery kept circulating in the years before the Civil War.
