Washington's inspection of the captured colors, the regimental flags taken from the Hessian garrison, is the moment this print commemorates. The Hessians surrendered at Trenton, New Jersey, on December 26, 1776, after Washington's army had crossed the icy Delaware River the night before. The victory, won with roughly 900 prisoners taken, lifted the sagging spirits of the Continental Army. This 1914 offset lithograph reproduces a painting by Percy Moran, an American artist who made many scenes of colonial and Revolutionary history.
