Here Washington and Lafayette meet in Philadelphia on August 3, 1777, a few days after Congress had commissioned the young French nobleman as a major general. Lafayette was not yet twenty and had crossed the Atlantic at his own expense to offer his services to the American cause, so the meeting marked the start of one of the Revolution's most important alliances. Published by Currier & Ives around 1876, the print belongs to the Centennial era, when the firm produced many images that revisited the nation's founding events for a public eager to celebrate the anniversary.
