Washington and the young French volunteer Marquis de Lafayette are the pair at the center of this painting by John Ward Dunsmore, a scene of the winter encampment at Valley Forge in 1777 to 1778. Lafayette had joined the Continental Army as a major general in 1777 at age 19 and became one of Washington's closest companions, so the pairing is a deliberate choice of subject. Dunsmore was known for Revolutionary War scenes, and this color halftone reproduction was issued by Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul and Toronto, a firm that sold widely distributed prints around 1907.
