Washington kneels in the snow at Valley Forge in this scene, drawn from a story that did not circulate until decades after the winter of 1777 and 1778. Henry Brueckner painted the original, and John C. McRae's engraving reproduced it around 1866, when such images were widely sold as symbols of the general's devotion. Historians treat the anecdote with caution because its source was a secondhand account, but the image helped shape how Americans remembered the camp as a test of faith and endurance.
