George Washington's winter encampment at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, from the winter of 1777 to 1778, is the subject here, rendered in color by the artist E. Percy Moran. Moran was a Detroit illustrator known for sentimental historical scenes, and this halftone print comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of color views for railroads and publishers in the early twentieth century. The encampment was a hard test for the Continental Army: thousands of soldiers suffered from cold, hunger and disease, yet the winter also saw Baron von Steuben drill the troops into a more disciplined force. Moran's painted interpretation shows the period as a moment of resolve rather than a documentary record.
