Lexington is where the shooting began: on the morning of April 19, 1775, a small company of colonial militia stood on the town green as British regulars marching from Boston to seize military stores at Concord arrived. Eight militiamen were killed in the brief exchange, and the event quickly became a rallying point for the rebellion. Engraved pictorial prints like this one circulated in the years after, carrying the scene to readers who had not been there and helping to fix the battle in the public memory as the opening act of the Revolutionary War.
