Rather than a photograph, this is a printed page from the Boston Gazette of December 20, 1773, and its headline announces the Boston Tea Party. Four days earlier, on December 16, colonists boarded East India Company ships in Boston Harbor and dumped 342 chests of tea into the water to protest the Tea Act and the taxes it enforced. The newspaper's account shows how quickly news of the act of defiance spread through the colonies and how the event was framed for readers at the time. Its coverage helped make Boston a center of the resistance that led toward the American Revolution.
