This c1911 photographic print depicts the Boston Tea Party, and the record does not name a photographer or give a more precise date. The 1773 protest, in which colonists boarded merchant ships in Boston Harbor and dumped chests of East India Company tea into the water, was a turning point in the run-up to the American Revolution. By the early twentieth century, the event had become a symbol of resistance to unfair taxation, and it was often commemorated in pageants and reenactments. Viewers may want to consider whether the image shows a historical scene or a later staging of it, since photographs from this period often recreated famous moments for public audiences.
