Ships in Boston Harbor were the scene of this event, which the title names as the destruction of the tea. On the night of December 16, 1773, colonists boarded three vessels carrying East India Company tea and dumped the cargo, roughly 340 chests, into the water. The protest was against the Tea Act, which kept a tax on tea while favoring the company's sales, and it became one of the best-known acts of resistance leading to the American Revolution. The record does not give a date for this print, so it is best read as a later depiction of the 1773 event rather than a view made at the time.
