The Boston Tea Party of December 16, 1773, is the event this picture depicts, when colonists boarded British East India Company ships in Griffin's Wharf and dumped chests of tea into the harbor to protest the Tea Act and the principle of taxation without representation. Britain answered with the Coercive Acts of 1774, which closed the port of Boston and tightened royal control over Massachusetts, turning a local dispute into a broader imperial crisis. Prints of the scene were widely circulated in the years that followed, and they helped shape how Americans and Britons alike understood the episode as a defining step toward the Revolutionary War.
