Few episodes of the Revolution are as recognizable as the night of December 16, 1773, when colonists boarded three ships carrying East India Company tea and dumped their cargo into Boston Harbor. Printed by Nathaniel Currier in New York in 1846, this hand-colored lithograph revisits that protest about 73 years later, when Americans were looking back on the Revolution with growing pride. Its popularity reflects the way the Tea Party had become a symbol of resistance to taxation without representation. Currier's firm sold such scenes of national history cheaply to a broad public, so the print shows how the event was remembered as much as how it happened.
