The Boston Tea Party of December 16, 1773, is the event this engraving depicts: colonists, some disguised as Mohawk men, emptying chests of East India Company tea into the water of Boston Harbor. This version appeared as a wood engraving in Harper's Monthly in December 1851, nearly eight decades after the fact, when the episode had become a staple of American patriotic memory. Its later date tells you more about the mid-nineteenth century than about the harbor itself, since illustrators of that period often reworked the scene to suit popular taste and national pride.
