The title page of the Boston Gazette for December 20, 1773, is a newspaper page rather than a photograph, and it carries the account of the Boston Tea Party. On the night of December 16, 1773, colonists disguised as Mohawk men boarded three ships in Boston Harbor and dumped 342 chests of East India Company tea into the water to protest the Tea Act and the tax it kept in place. Papers like the Gazette carried news of the protest to readers across the colonies, where it was debated and repeated, helping turn a local dispute into a wider argument over taxation and representation.
