Printed in Boston in 1779, this title page belongs to *The New England Primer*, one of the most widely used schoolbooks in colonial New England. The Primer taught children to read with the alphabet, rhymed verses, and passages drawn from religious teaching, and it had been reprinted for generations by the time this edition appeared. The date is worth noting: British troops had left Boston in March 1776, so a new printing from the town three years later reflects the local book trade working during the Revolutionary War. The woodcut is a typical example of the block-printed illustration that made such school books recognizable to their young readers.
