A wood engraving of Anthony Burns, shown in half-length portrait, opens this 1854 pamphlet, which pairs his likeness with a title page promising an account of the Boston riot and trial. Burns had escaped from enslavement in Virginia, and he was arrested in Boston in May 1854 under the Fugitive Slave Act. His hearing drew large crowds to the courthouse, and a rescue attempt that month left a deputy dead. Burns was eventually returned south under heavy federal guard, and the case deepened the divide between Boston's abolitionists and the federal authorities enforcing the law.
