Cy Young, the Boston pitcher, is shown here in a full-length portrait taken in 1908, mid-delivery as he holds a baseball and faces to the right. By that summer Young was past his prime but still a fixture on the Boston American League roster, a veteran whose career stretched back to the 1890s and whose wins total would become legendary. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a large body of news photographs gathered by a New York agency in the early 1900s, which captured ballplayers, politicians and street scenes of the era. Its stiff, posed stance reflects how photographers of the period framed athletes for newspaper readers.
