Here Samuel Adams is shown full length, standing beside a chair, a more formal pose than the half-length likenesses that were common for him. Adams (1722–1803) was a Boston brewer, tax protester, and leader of the Sons of Liberty, and he later signed the Declaration of Independence and served as governor of Massachusetts. Portraits like this one often reproduced an earlier painting for a wider audience, so the color version tells you as much about how Adams was remembered as about how he looked in his own day.
