Boston Corbett is an unlikely subject for a portrait in a city gallery, but his name ties him to the city. Before the Civil War he worked as a hatter in Boston, and he later became known nationwide as the Union cavalry sergeant who shot John Wilkes Booth in a Virginia tobacco barn in April 1865. The caption card gives no date, so the sitting itself is hard to place. Still, the seated, half-length pose suggests a studio portrait made for a man who had become a public figure after the war.
