This 1939 portrait shows Bishop Fan Stylian Noli at half-length, facing the camera with one hand raised in blessing, a gesture that signals his clerical role. The photograph was made in Boston, where Noli spent much of his later life leading the Albanian Orthodox community in America. He had earlier served briefly as prime minister of Albania in 1924 before being forced from power, so the image captures a churchman who was also a political figure in exile. Its Boston setting is a reminder of the sizable Albanian immigrant community that formed in New England in the early twentieth century.
