A portrait bust of Bert M. Fernald, made at the Notman studio in Boston, sets this glass negative apart from the many city views on the board. The Notman Photographic Company was founded in Montreal by William Notman and operated studios in several cities, producing formal portraits for clients across the Northeast. The negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the archive of the New York news-photo service that the Library of Congress later acquired. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption data the Bain News Service recorded and that has not been verified.
