This head-and-shoulders study shows Henry David Thoreau turned slightly to the right. Its date of about 1879, seventeen years after his death in 1862, and the copyright notice in the name of photographer Geo. F. Parlow suggest a later reproduction of an earlier sitting, though the record does not say when that original was made. Thoreau, a Concord writer and friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson, wrote *Walden*, drawn from his two years at Walden Pond and published in 1854. The portrait offers a face for a writer whose quiet, skeptical essays on nature and conscience have shaped American letters.
