Bill Russell stands full-length in a Boston Celtics uniform, facing the camera with a basketball in hand, as if pausing mid-dribble. The picture dates to 1958 and comes from the New York World-Telegram & Sun collection, a newspaper photo archive that preserved many portraits of athletes and entertainers from the decade. Russell was in his second season with Boston, where he would help the Celtics win NBA titles in 1959 and 1960. The plain pose is worth noticing, since it shows a player whose defense and rebounding would come to define his legacy.
