Jimmy Barrett appears in a tight bust view, facing right in his Boston American League uniform, a detail that sets this portrait apart from the many full-length team pictures of the era. Barrett was an outfielder known for his speed and his ability to reach base, which made him useful at the top of a batting order. The photograph came from the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied newspapers with pictures of athletes and public figures. The 1908 date was assigned in 2006 by the Society for American Baseball Research's Pictorial History Committee after research, rather than taken from an original caption.
