Kennedy is shown here in a close head-and-shoulders view, a small cigar in hand, at a Democratic fundraiser held in Boston's Commonwealth Armory in October 1963. The picture came over the wire as a United Press International telephoto, a format that let news photographs travel quickly from event to newspaper desk in the early 1960s. Kennedy was a Massachusetts native, and Boston events drew him home often, so the setting carries local as well as national weight. The image is part of the New York World-Telegram and the Sun newspaper collection, and its title was written by Library of Congress staff rather than taken from a caption of the day.
