Rather than a view of a street or building, this stereograph records an arrangement of skeleton leaves, the translucent veins left after a leaf's soft tissue has been removed. In the 1870s, assembling these fragile specimens into decorative compositions was a popular parlor pastime, and photographing them gave the delicate designs a wider audience. Credited to John P. Soule of Boston, the card was meant for a stereoscope, where the two slightly offset images merged into a single three-dimensional view of the leaves.
