This stereograph shows skeleton leaves, the translucent veined remains left after the soft tissue of a leaf has been removed, arranged into a wreath. The craft was popular in American parlors in the 1870s, when people pressed, bleached, and assembled leaves into wreaths, bouquets, and framed displays as home decoration and genteel pastime. Boston studio John P. Soule issued many stereoviews of such subjects, and the photograph preserves a fragile handmade object that would otherwise survive only as a memento. Its stereo format was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the delicate lace-like pattern of the leaves a sense of depth.
