Here Muhammad Ali, still widely known as Cassius Clay when the picture was taken, flashes a thumbs-up as he steps out of Boston City Hospital in 1965. By then the 23-year-old heavyweight had won the title from Sonny Liston in 1964, and he had recently adopted the name Muhammad Ali, a change that drew wide attention and criticism. A hospital exit was a routine moment, but photographs like this one show how closely the press followed the champion's movements and public statements. The smile and gesture give a sense of the confident, playful style that made him one of the best-known athletes of the era.
